International bombing raids, such as the ones carried out over Iraq in 2003, will be "low priority" of Cielo Salvatore from now on.

Government declares neutrality and re-aligns military objectives
New strategy for Armato Salvatore unveiled as Lord Celestine's secret pact with Arcacia is revealed

The Ministry of Defence has announced its new Strategic Defence Priorities (SDP), centred around the Statement of Neutrality drawn up in Arcacia and signed by Lord Secolo during his tour of the Eastern Hemisphere. The SDP has pledged to refocus the Armato Salvatore towards its "natural role as a defensive, national-focused armed forces" that "ensures the protection of Cattalian civilians is put first and international conflicts are kept to an absolute minimum." The government declaration of neutrality is enshrined in the priorities, a point which has been highlighted extensively by Lord Taddeo Horandi during the document and in his closing statement, he addresses the main focuses of the SDP.

"The Armed Saviours were central forces of the Amadeus Resistance Army in the Second World War. In recent years their role as protectors of Cattala and the island's territorial waters have fallen down the list of priorities due to international pressure and commitments to overseas missions. This SDP will ensure that the security of Cattala remains paramount to the military and the continuing investment over the next five years in new technology and equipment will guarantee that the objective of refocusing on national security is achieved."

The government's objectives include realigning the military back to its role as a defensive force, which will prevent it from intervening in foreign conflicts and will result in the scaling back of overseas missions. However critics have claimed that this is a mask for further cuts in the Terra Salvatore, which is already described as a "defensive land army", and makes the $2bn aircraft carrier "useless" and a "clear conflict of interest with the SDP". The Ministry of Defence released a statement denying that this would lead to further cuts in the army but may result in "troop re-stationing" and the "restructuring" of overseas bases. They also claimed that the carrier would allow for "diversification" of air and naval command and would provide "greater strength and concentration" of the navy and air force in "territorial waters and the wider Mediterranean to ensure shipping and trade links are secure".

Further details on the changes necessary to implement this new strategy will be released over the coming weeks, although leaks have already suggested that international bases may be at risk and the Marino-Cielo Immigration Command Centre will be expanded to prevent illegal immigration by sea.

I like this a lot. Cattala will no doubt be seen as a more friendly country as a result.

Towns and villages in Hellas and northern Fieranti have been affected by flash flooding, but the weather has improved since Thursday

Flash flooding damages northern Cattala, Sicily and Calabria
Deaths in Saponara, but Hellas and Fieranti escape relatively unscathed from landslide-creating floods

Three people have died and dozens injured across the Ionian Sea as flash flooding caused severe damage to homes, vehicles and communities. The worst of the storms hit Sicily, where three people died and one village was hit by landslides that swept through the streets and caused chaos. In Cattala, at least 15 people were injured by the flooding which was caused by 10cm of rain per hour falling on the north-western Ionian Sea. Transport was worst affected, with the main Calora-Seina motorway closed for one hour after a lorry jackknifed and blocked the carriageway, and the coastal railway remains shut due to flooded tracks and the collapse of a bridge in Calabria. Schools were closed in Amano and coastal communities ground to a halt due to the overworked drains and flooded streets.

"Cattala has escaped the worst of the storms, but there has been considerable damage to coastal communities, especially in northern Fieranti and in Hellas province. Flooded drains have been the main problem, causing roads to close and travel to become dangerous. Sicily has had it worst though." said RMI News weather editor Benjamin Allena.

NOTE: This flooding has really happened and unfortunately has really taken lives in Sicily. I've tried to incorporate this real life event as carefully as I can and I've left posting this for a couple of days. If anyone feels it's wrong to use a real life disaster in my papers then I will willingly take it down.
