Cateilla
This small town in the Norte region is one of the region's most popular tourist destinations. The town was badly damaged during the Civil War due to heavy fighting between government forces and the Guerillas. Today, the town has been painstakingly restored and there are little signs that any conflict ever took place. Cateilla serves as a base camp for tourists that wish to explore the area's lush jungle. Many others also come to Cateilla to take in the colonial atmosphere of the town.
Cateilla is unusual due to the fact that it was built in the middle of the jungle. Nobody is certain why Cateilla was built in such an isolated and remote area but one theory revolves around the legend of a lost city in the jungle and that Spanish explorers built the town as a base to search for this lost city.
Plaza de los Santos is the center of Cateilla. Rising majestically from the square is the Catedral de San Martín.
Typical architecture
The San Cristóbal Convent was built in 1789 and served as a gathering place for the church clergy. Later on during the Gold Rush the convent was converted into a warehouse to store crates of gold before they were put on a train and brought to Puerto España where they would then be loaded onto ships. More recently during the civil war the convent served as a safehouse for refugees hiding from the Guerillas. Today, the convent has been returned to the church.

The ruins of the Iglesia de San Pablo. This large church was built by Brazilian missionaries in the mid 1700's and was destroyed by a fire in 1869. There are many accounts of miracles taking place at the church over the years and today the ruins serve as a pilgrimage site. To reach the ruins there is a funicular that brings people from the town up to the top of the hill in 20 minutes.
The Hopital del Sagrado Corazón is the city's main and only hospital.
The Museo Indegenas (Indigenous Museum) contains artifacts and documents that outline the history and culture of the numerous indigenous tribes that reside in the jungle areas.

Re: Cateilla
Very nice close-up's, I like them. The train station is very imaginative, I like it. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the convent from?
