Santo Fidel
Located on the eastern side of Lago Santiago (Lake Santiago) is the industrial city of Santo Fidel. The city was built almost entirely from scratch during the Communist Era as a center for manufacturing goods, smelting metals and also as an inland port to ship goods from inland Martazuela to Puerto España. The city grew rapidly and in order to house workers large prefabricated apartment blocks went up. For years the city prospered and at one point Santo Fidel was one of the country's fastest growing cities. However, when the Communist Era ended the majority of the state owned corporations collapsed and went bankrupt this led to the loss of almost 15 200 jobs. From then on Santo Fidel began to fall into disrepair and poverty. In addition to this the heavy industries that are located in the city have led to major air and water pollution. Today, Santo Fidel has become one of the country's poorest and most polluted cities.
San Juarez is a large slum near the city centre.
The area known as Barrio Nuevo is made up of crumbling, dilapidated apartment blocks built during the Communist Era.
The main industrial district.
A cargo ship docked at the port awaits its cargo. From there the ship will travel across Lago Santiago, up the Rio del Oro then down the Rio Azul to Puerto España.
The Abdul-Al Shameen Mosque was built in the wealthier colonial neighbourhood of Barria Colonia to cater to the large Muslim population in the city. Most of them work in the industrial sector and were hired by major industrial companies.
