As Cill Orglan | Nollaig Shona Daoibh agus athbhliain faoi mhaise!
This is my forth attempt at this after accidentally closing the tab twice and my laptop running out of battery - so read/laugh/cry/enjoy OR ELSE
A lovely, heart warming Christmas card from Guinness
A not so lovely message of the importance of selflessness from Irn Bru (a Scottish soft drink made from rust, popular in Killorglin)
And before we begin a quick Irish lesson: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! = Nollaig Shona agus Athbhliain faoi Mhaise Duit! in Irish pronounced - NO-lihg SHO-nuh AH-gas AH-vlee-ihn fwee WAH-shuh dich or if you are talking to more than one person replace the Duit on the end with Daoibh (dweeve). The common response to someone saying this is Go mba hé duit guh may hay wich which means: 'The same to you'.
On with the show...
Frozen Beach and Icy Coastline at The Marina, Lom Trá (literally Bare Strand), Killorglin
This Christmas has been very special in Killorglin, it is the first white Christmas in over 70 years! With up to a foot of snow in some places (an average of 9 inches) it is special for even winter where only up to an inch of snow is the norm. This snow has caused chaos over the past couple of weeks with Killorglians stranded abroad over Christmas, the armed forces being deployed to clear roads and the airport runway, a national salt shortage due to Ireland stopping exports and severe disruption to the Bunratty summit which is now postponed until 27th/28th December.
Snowy Terraces at Ascot Square, Bunratty, Killorglin
Councils have decorated major public areas and streets between the 6st December (first Monday in December) and Epiphany (6th January). This is one of the smartest areas in South Bunratty at a standstill due to the snow.
Skinny Dipping at The Wee Spring Pond, Dookinella Forest Park, Killorglin
Whilst most Killorglians have a traditional Christmas consisting of leaving mince pies and a bottle of Guinness or Harp out as a snack for Santa, Christmas Dinner (taken around 4pm), lighting candles in all the windows and leaving bread and a jug of milk out as a sign of hospitality and children leaving red sacks (none of that stocking shite) beside the fire to be filled with presents.
There are a few mad souls who brave the icy waters and go for skinny dip in many organised events across the country in aid of charity. No other events can legally take place on Christmas Day (unless religious services/masses) and no money can exchange hands for goods or services (therefore only emergency services are permitted to work).
Have a lovely Christmas everyone and see you on Boxing Day! (if i'm not dead from alcohol poisoning or haven't mauled by a rabid schnauzer )
