House to Vote on Military Expansion
Landmark bill to restore and modernize Illu'a's military.

The House of Commons yesterday set up a vote next week to pass a large scale military increase in Illu'a.

The House voted 35-25 to start the vote.

"Today we are taking the first step in creating a safer, more independent Illu'a," Rep. Drier Davids, C-Ash, who led the Conservatives in the debate, said. "We are setting in motion a process to modernize, revitalize, and eventually double the size of the Illu'an Armed Forces."

A full vote will occur in the House on January 19, but it's seen as a long way to go since President Pitt has said he would veto any measure to increase the military.

Still, the vote is becoming much bigger than its projected implications, inspiring heated debate among both supporters and critics of the bill.

The Illu'an Democratic Party has focused on a National Budget Office report released last week that said the measure would add ₴37 billion in costs over the next ten years. Senator Sarah McGruber, D-Win, said in a statement the repeal would hurt the country, hurt the budget and "place the military and violence over more peaceful measures."

Opinions: CATAF Conflict Concerns Country
How Cattala-Atlantic Federation relations affect Illu'a

As many of you already know, Cattala and the Atlantic Federation (CATAF) aren't exactly the best of friends at this moment. There has been many rumors and ideas about what CATAF might end up doing that would affect Illu'a and the AIN. No matter what happens though, Illu'a isn't going to be a bystander in future events.

There are many ties with Illu'a and CATAF. Cattala is an ally of both Illu'a and Lower Columbia. Frequent discussions happen between Lord Celestine and President Pitt occur about economics and the AIN in general. The Atlantic Federation, being an economic powerhouse, has trade with Illu'a. The AF's neighbor, Galbadia, is planning to sell high-end military equipment for Illu'a's planned military expansion. Choosing one side in CATAF over the other is going to cause a ripple effect throughout Illu'an relations.

If the CATAF Conflict unlikely turns into a war, Illu'a would probably be forced to support their closest ally, Lower Columbia. If that happens, it's going to be an almost impossible task to get Illu'a's Galbadia-manufactured equipment, especially something as huge and slow as an aircraft carrier. There would be a waste of money right there - ₴6.7 billion stuck in some foreign drydock or the bottom of the sea. Even if Illu'a stays completely neutral, there is a chance that neutral ships and planes would be sunk.

In the end, watch out. This could be an unpredictable future...

Note that this is an opinion article written in the perspective of such and that none of this may be true. However, feel free to use the term "CATAF Conflict." CATAF is pronounced cat-aff.

House and Senate Pass Military Reform
The vote creates a 10 year plan to double Illu'a's military

Illu'an Congress - Ending the Conservative's quest to create a more independent defense force, the House of Commons and the Senate on Sunday night approved sweeping legislation to increase the size of the military since the Puget Sound War. The bill faces possible veto from President Pitt.

The bill, which passed 35 to 25, would make a nearly ₴40-billion commitment in taxpayer money over the next two decades to employ 30,000 long term jobs and practically double the capabilities of the Armed Forces. And it would introduce new technologies systemwide to, as advocates hope, become one of the most modern military forces in the world.

On the Senate floor, Conservatives erupted into cheers around 10:45 p.m. as the decisive 31th "yes" vote was recorded, concluding an exhausting campaign by various groups since the 1900's. "This is the Biggest legislation we have been pushing for," said Conservative Rep. James E. Wade of Nordvast.

Bicycling starting up in Colbitz
New bike-friendly infrastructure arrives as I-Cycle arrives in Colbitz.

Colbitz, Ashcroft - Drivers in the Capital could be sharing the roadways with more cyclists as the city expands its network of dedicated bicycle lanes and increases the number of bikes available in a regional program.

Signs and white flexible posts separating bike lanes from car lanes were installed along a stretch of 5th Avenue this week. When the work is finished, cyclists will be able to take 5th Avenue from Downtown Colbitz to Louise Street and Louise Street to across the river via a subway train with bike racks. The two-way cycle track includes a new bicycle traffic signal at 5th and Montgomery St.

"We're still working on about six or seven blocks of 5th Avenue," Raphael Cruz, cycling coordinator for the Ashcroft Department of Transportation, said Thursday. "My guys are working on the finishing touches. . . . I'm guessing it will all be open by next week."

Colbitz has 30 miles of bike lanes on its 1,300 miles of streets. It has created 25 of the 30 miles in the past nine years, Cruz said. Crews installed a bike lane on 5th Avenue south to Montgomery Street in fall 2009 and on Louise Street this past spring. The dedicated lanes were designed to protect the riders and to increase the number of people who consider bicycling as a mode of transportation, Crux said.

The city will launch I-Cycle, a regional bike-sharing network, in February. I-Cycle would have 620 bikes in 70 locations by next year, transportation officials said.

Note that I'm accelerating the military timeframe for roleplaying purposes.

Pitt Vetoes Military Redevelopment and Expansion Act
President Doesn't Sign Despite Overwhelming Congressional Approval

In a move that was not a surprise to anyone, President Pitt has vetoed the Military Redevelopment and Expansion Act. Pitt withheld his approval of the bill, claiming it is another example of "unnecessary waste." The Act passed both the House and the Senate with large margins and bi-partisan support.

The Executive House issued a press release in which the President explains why he vetoed the military bill. Pitt's first comment was that "this bill lacks fiscal discipline." Pitt goes on to admonish the bill for outsourcing funds to other nations, where he says could be spent in Illu'a or Lower Columbia. Pitt points out that the House version of the bill was set at a cost of ₴37 billion, and the Senate bill called for ₴40 billion, and the compromised bill between the two chambers is now set at ₴35 billion.

Pitt continued to mention that the Illu'an Armed Forces and military projects around the country are already being upgraded, and with the new bill, the military will be inundated with new construction that will create a backlog. The president adds that the military bill does "not set priorities." He claims that his administration has asked Congress to set priorities for those projects that need the most attention, namely Sockerton IAB and the Coast Guard.

VETO OVERRIDDEN
Illu'an military expansion official

Colbitz, Ashcroft - Congress handed President Edward Pitt the first veto defeat of his presidency today as the Senate approved the ₴40 billion Military Redevelopment and Expansion Act, MREA, by a wide majority. The House of Commons voted overwhelmingly to override the president's veto on Thursday.

With the Senate vote, the measure to authorize more than 200 military contracts, upgrades, expansions, and redeployment projects became law.

President Pitt did not immediately comment on the Congressional action. Announcing his veto Friday, the president said the measure was "not fiscally responsible." "Taxpayers should not be asked to support a pork-barrel system of funding where a project's results is an afterthought," Pitt said.
